Letter sent from the French Office of Beyrouth to the United States on 28 February 1853.

On the reverse handwritten in black ink 8 g (8 grams so double rate letter for France) and "36", to indicate the prepayment of 180x2= 360 French centimes. This amount paid all transit fees to the U.S. border by British packet. 

The letter was sent to Paris, where it received on the right side a double circular datestamp dated 15 March 1853. Then the letter was sent to Liverpool for the steamer to the United States. The letter was included in the mail placed on board the Cunard steamship Niagara, departing Liverpool on 19 March and arriving at Boston on 1 April 1853. (1)

A Boston clerk struck on the left side the black postmark “BOSTON Br.PKT. / 5 / date” indicating the postage due 5¢ for a letter weighting less than 1/2 oz. or 14,2 grams.
