Lambaréné is a town in Gabon, deep in the interior of what was then called the French Congo, 75 kilometers south of the equator. Lambaréné is located in the Central African Rainforest on the River Ogooué. The cover is addressed to Rev. Herman Jacot, a Presbyterian missionary who moved to the French Congo to minister to the natives, and prematurely died on the Ogowé River there in 1895. Jacot sailed for Africa in August 1890 with his wife Helene Ladore of Switzerland, for the Gaboon and Corisco mission of the Presbyterian Foreign Mission in the French Congo. That his wife was from Switzerland may provide a clue why this cover was forwarded to St. Croix, Switzerland. In the "Columbia College in the City of New York, General Catalogue 1754-1894, Officers and Graduates" (1894), he is listed as Rev. Herman Louis Jacot, a 1887 Graduate in Arts, residing at that time in Lambaréné, Ogowé, Congo Francais, West Africa.
