Scott's US #26 3-cent red tied on cover with New Orleans LA cds dated 25 FEB (1861) sent by Duncan, Payne & Co. with preprinted return address, to Colonel John Duncan (1812-1872) in Jackson MS. Docketing indicates mailing year is 1861 with reply mailed May 29 1861. John Duncan was a rich plantation owner who lived at "Casa Mia" in Jackson and was a personal friend of Jefferson Davis, who visited often prewar. COL Duncan supplied and equipped an infantry company called the Duncan Rifles, part of the 45th MS Inf Reg.
