30c Black Small Bank Note (#228) tied by "New York Aug 29 91" duplex postmark on cover to Hamburg, Germany, with corner card of "Insular Navigation Co., Azores, Madeira, Lisbon, etc."  Hamburg arrival backstamp 1891. This scarce use of the 1890 issue 30c stamp paid 6 times the 5c UPU rate, per half ounce.

Cover is endorsed "Per Aller". The SS Aller was operated by Nord-deutscher Lloyd (North German Lloyd Company), built 1886, scrapped 1904, 4,964 gross tons.

The Insular Navigation Co. operated a transatlantic passenger steamship line whose route was from the Azores to Lisbon to New Bedford, Mass. to New York. In 1891 it had only one ship in operation, the S.S. Vega. The line's previous vessel, the S.S. Benguella, was lost at sea in June 1890.
