1867 Hungary 15kr brown (Gibbons AH55) tied by "Putnok 22/10" (1868) circular datestamp on registerered cover to Torna. Tornallya 22/10 and Szin 24/10 transit circular datestamps on back, Torna 25/10 arrival cds. "Ajanlott Sz" handstamp (Hungarian: Registered). The "Sz" is Hungarian for "Szám" (Number) with manuscript "354" registry number. Letter datelined October 18th 1868.

10kr registration fee plus 5kr uniform domestic letter rate = 15kr total postage.

Putnok is a town in northern Hungary, between the Bükk Mountains and the river Sajó. Tornallya is a town located in the historical Germer region, currently in Slovakia, and lies on the Slaná River. Szin is a village in northeast Hungary. Turňa nad Bodvou (Hungarian:Torna) is a village in the Košice Region of eastern Slovakia, near the border with Hungary.

Collector's note on back that this cover was bought from a Mercury Stamp Co. Auction (run by Edwin Mueller) in New York, Dec. 15, 1948. Richard Frajola has named this census site "Phila Mercury" in honor of Edwin Mueller and his Mercury Stamp Company. Mueller was an expert on European classic stamps and postal history. He wrote a series of articles in the Mercury Stamp Journal, available on this website.
