Origin: Milano, Lombardy-Venetia, AUSTRIA
Destination: Vienna (Wien), AUSTRIA

Registered folded outer letter sheet sent from Milano to Vienna, posted 7 March 1859, franked with Lombardy-Venetia 15 soldi blue on front, 10 soldi brown on reverse, both Type I (Scott #12a, 11a, Sassone #27, 26) both tied by rectangular framed "MILANO 7/3 *" (year date removed), with boxed arrival datestamp on reverse "Wien 9/3 5.f."  Red "RACCOMANDIATA" (Registered) handstamp and ms. notation. Sender's blue merchant oval marking "Pasqualede Vecchi & C. Milano". 7 Marzo 1859 docketing. 2005 Sergio Sismondo certificate.

The 15 soldi stamp paid for the postage for a single rate letter from Austria, the 10 soldi stamp paid for the registration fee. Standard Austrian practice at that time was to place the stamp paying the registration fee on the reverse.  After its normal usage in 1853, the rectangular framed datestamp of Milano had the year plugs removed, and was subsequently used on registered letters only, until 1859, at which time it was withdrawn from use.
