Description:

3c dull red type III (#26) and 1c blue type V (#24) tied by circular grid cancels with "Brooklyn N.Y. Sep 6" circular datestamp on cover to street address in New York City. The 1c stamp paid the "to-the-mails" carrier fee in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The first advertisement indicating that the Brooklyn post office offered carrier collection service occurred in 1855. Prior to 1856, letters "to-the-mails", such as this, were collected without charge. Stamps were first used to pay the 1c carrier fee in 1860 in Brooklyn. Prior to that, the 1c fee was paid in cash directly to the carrier.  Information courtesy of Steve Roth.
