N London straightline, Ship, Private carrier Delivery, 1799 May 30th Stampless folded letter from Francis Smith, in Demerara. The letter was carried from Demerara to Tortola by sloop Pachnel, Capt. Buckman (destination Portland Maine). In Tortola the letter was transferred to Capt. Hempsted of the Brig Peggy sailing for New London who arrived on Feb 15th. The letter arriving in New London received its "N London" 21x4mm handstamp and manuscript Sh18 rate (double letter: 16 cents plus 2 cent ship fee =18 cents) . Letter was delivered to the Norwich Post Office, just over 2 miles from the recipients (Andrew & Joseph Perkins) place of business at Chelsea Landing. They paid a private carrier to deliver their letters to them. They added the 2 cents paid the private carrier, to the letter as a part of accounting practice.
