Description:

Wells Fargo printed frank on 3c pink on buff postal entire (#U35) with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Sac. Messenger May 3" oval marking (Leutzinger type 8-2) tying 3c pink (#65), to Downieville, California. This was a double weight letter which required a double express fee (10c x 2 = 20c) which included the 3c stamp added by Wells Fargo.

Wells Fargo Sacramento Messenger datestamps, such as this, were applied to letters picked up between towns having a Wells Fargo office, or along the route, usually by ship. In this case this letter could have been given to the Wells Fargo agent onboard the steamboat traveling between San Francisco and Sacramento.
