Description:

CSA #6 on cover manuscript postmarked RALEIGH, NC, MAY 9 (1862) sent to Hillsboro, NC. There are 2 known manuscript RALEIGH, NC postmarks used during May, 1862. The other manuscript usage is a stampless folded letter. This is the only recorded manuscript usage on a CSA General Issue. Something must have happened to the Raleigh, NC postmaster's handstamp device as a few days prior a prewar device was used to postmark a CSA #6  cover on MAY 7, 1862 (Pic 2). There are 3 types of Raleigh, NC postmarks listed in the CONFEDERATE STATES of AMERICA, Catalog and Handbook of Stamps and Postal History: A manuscript postmark, a 26mm double circle handstamp, and a 31mm (Prewar) circle Raleigh, NC postmark handstamp.
