[Fort Bridger, Wyoming, 1857] manuscript December 1 (1857) postmark while Utah Territory on legal size, Capt. Jesse Gove correspondence cover to his wife at Concord, New Hampshire, double rate prepaid with pair 3c orange brown (#11) with matching pen cancels, cover with original wax seal on reverse, refolded at both sides, a rare marking

(note from Walske article on Utah Expedition in Chronicle #248):

"Miles began his contract mail service on October 1,1857 from Independence, but the circumstances prevented him from reaching Salt Lake City, so he used Fort Bridger as his western terminus for the duration of his contract. Gove reported the arrival of the first westbound mail trip at Fort Bridger on November 19 (1857).

Miles’ first eastbound mail left Fort Bridger on December 1, 1857 and carried the Gove letter illustrated in Figure 4. This is the earliest possible date from the re-opened Fort Bridger post office."
