Origin: Portland, Oregon, UNITED STATES
Destination: Clinton, Kansas, UNITED STATES

Description:

"Portland OR." double circle datestamp ties 10c green type V (#35) position 78L2 (small "curl" on forehead) on yellow cover to Clinton, Kansas Territory, endorsed "Via Los angelous" for the Butterfield Overland Route to St. Louis. This route was closed in 1861 during the American Civil War.

Portland postmark is 26mm Whittlesey type 6, with a EKU of 24 Sept. 1859. Scarce 1860 overland use with a very fine type V 10c stamp.

Traveled from Portland to San Francisco by ship, then by stage to Los Angeles to St. Louis, Mo., to Clinton, Kansas Territory. Because the cover originated in Portland and the distance to destination as traveled was over 3,000 miles, the rate was 10c. Probably dates from early 1860.
