Description:

[Pony Express] cover carried on eastbound trip departing San Francisco on September 1, 1860, bold COC&PP St Joseph Sep 13 pony arrival postmark (the earliest reported date of use) and manuscript "1/2" ounce rate ($5.00), entered the mails with St Joseph postmark,10c green (#35)  tied, addressed to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, cover restored tear at top, Frajola, Walske Kramer census number E18, PF cert, ex Dale-Lichtenstein, Walske and David New

Envelope may have contained a letter from newly appointed Superintending Agent of the Northern Indian District (located in Shasta, CA), John A. Dreibelbis regarding an incident that had occured just before the pony express left San Francisco. It was reported in Baltimore newspaper of September 19 (this date consistent only with news having been received by pony express) that the newly appointed Indian Agent had been engaged in a street fight with R.F. Sprague in Shasta, California because the latter accused the former of seceding from the Charleston Convention to earn the office. Dreibelbis had been one of the California delegates to the Charleston Convention.

The addressee of this cover, Alfred Burton Greenwood, had served as a Congressman from Arkansas before appointment as Indian Commissoner. He resigned in March 1861 and after Arkansas seceded from the Union he became an ardent Confederate supporter. Confederate president Jefferson Davis first called on Greenwood, to seek the enlistment of Cherokee and Chocktaw Nations into the Confederate army.
