Description:

Single Scott's US #65 tied to cover with a single strike of the Franklin KY postmark dated September 11 (1862). The cover was then postmarked a second time with a blue barred "killer" at Bowling Green KY on September 12, 1862. Research indicates the envelope was posted by CPT Benjamin F. Heskett, commander of Company C, 51st Ohio Infantry and sent to his wife Mrs Elmira V. (Chandler) Heskett in Martinsburg OH. Pencil notation on reverse reads "Franklin KY Sept 11th / We are here / All well" in three lines. CPT Heskett died as a result of wounds received at the Battle of Stones River, TN on 4 January 1863.
