Destination: Boston, Massachusetts, UNITED STATES

Description:

1870 2c red brown National Bank Note (#146) x2 tied by cork cancels with "Boston Mass. Jan 19" (1873) 25mm circular datestamp (Blake no. 1048) on drop letter. Letter was privately carried from London, Great Britain. On inside is blue "Albert A. Cobb & Co. Boston. Jan 20 1873" merchant's receiving handstamp.

Contents are datelined "London, 2 January 1872" (actually 1873). On side flap is blue "Brown Brothers & Co. Boston Jan 18 1873" merchant's handstamp.

Evidently when this cover was privately carried to Boston from London it was turned over to Brown Brothers & Co. in Boston (mentioned in the letter), who probably applied the two 2c stamps and deposited it into the Boston post office as a drop letter. The contents mention that another letter was enclosed (statement of account). It is not known why two 2c stamps were affixed to pay the 2c drop letter fee, which was not based on weight. Hence only one 2c stamp would have been sufficient.
