Privately delivered folded letter datelined "Philada. August 1st 1849" to Byberry Township, Philada. County. Directive "Politeness of A. Manderson Esq."

Continuation of letter on second page:
"Present my compliments to your schoolmate Miss Lizzie Manderson and say to her, I hope you and she may not get far into Quakerism as to forget to fast and pray on Sixth day next, in accordance with the Proclamation of "Old Rough & Ready".
I remain, My Dear Child, Your Affectionate Father, John C. Keen.
To Miss Ellen F. Keen

President Zachary Taylor, known as "Old Rough and Ready", issued an extraordinary presidential proclamation in the summer of 1849 calling for prayer and fasting after a serious epidemic of cholera had broken out, spreading to every state across the country. Most businesses closed that August 3, and churches and synagogues of every denomination opened their doors for a day of prayer.

Byberry is now a neighborhood in the far northeast section of Philadelphia. Originally it was incorporated as the Township of Byberry before the City and County were consolidated in 1854.
