1861 issue 3c rose (#65) with pen cancel and "Humboldt Wis. Oct 21" (1863) manuscript postmark on orange cover to Stockton, Chantauqua County, N.Y. With original two page letter datelined "Sunday eve Oct 18th 1863".

Transcript of second page of letter: "do you know where Flora is if you do I should like to know, I sent her a letter last Dec. and it came back from the dead letter office and I have not heard from her since. There is  a young lady out here that took quite a fancy to your photograph. Write soon and direct to Humboldt, Sauk Co. Wis. Please excuse all mistakes and bad writeing (sic) and give our love to all inquiring friends and except (sic) a share your self from your cousin L.M. Grover

Humboldt was in Sauk County, Wisconsin. The post office was established in 1857 and closed in 1867. According to "A Standard History of Sauk County Wisconsin, Vol. I",  edited by Harry Ellsworth Cole, published in 1918, Humboldt is listed as a "Discontinued post office, section 35, town of Ironton, probably named for the geographer Baron Alexander von Humboldt."
