#26, very good, manuscript cancel, on a yellow envelope with red "OSO TEX May 30" CDS addressed to Fort Gibson, Indian Territory and forwarded with "Fort Gibson Ark. June 24" CDS and manuscript "forwd 3 c" to Fort Leavenworth. Opening reduction of less than 1/4" at left. Also small area of acid ink erosion in heavily crossed out portion of address restored by Nancy Poli who also replaced the missing backflap. Cost $600 hammer in Bennett's 2003 Bleuler sale (pre-restoration).

A very early use from Oso, a Fayette Co. DPO (1858-1874). At the time that this cover was mailed, Fort Gibson was supplied by steamboats but also by the famous Texas Road (or Shawnee Trail), a highway for cattle drives, emigrants, and traders that traversed southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas before following the Rio Grande past Fort Gibson and terminating in Texas. It is likely that this cover was carried by stage from Oso to Dallas where it then followed the Texas Road northward.
