Formal post office operations began in BC & VI with the November 24, 1858 Victoria Postal Notice.  Cover departed Liverpool om 7 May 1859 on Cunard steamer Canada and arrived 20 May, then cover was carried via Panama on 20 May 1859 from New York by USMSC steamer Star of the West and from Panama to San Francisco by PMSS steamer Golden Gate that arvvied San Francisco on Jun 13th . Mail was carried gratis from San Francisco by PMSS steamships when they stopped at VI. This was carried by PMSS setamer Northerner from San Francisco to Victoria.
