Red "Providence R.I. Feb 19 5 cts." (1851) 33mm circular integral rate datestamp on blue folded letter to Peace Dale, Kingston, R.I., datelined "Providence Feb 19th 1851". Docketing reads: "Alexander Hodges Feby 19th/ 51".

This is a very puzzling cover. There is a red 10 x 10mm "2" handstamp that lies within the Providence datestamp. Due to ink migration  is impossible to tell whether the "2" marking was struck before or after the datestamp. This cover is not a drop letter (2c rate), since it is not addressed locally to Providence. Peace Dale is 30 miles to the south of Providence. Kingston is a town close by Peace Dale. 5c would have been the proper collect rate.

In addition, this style of "2" marking is decidedly different from the "2" marking occasionally seen for drop letters from Providence. See Cover ID 25830. The "2" marking is also struck in a different color shade red ink than that of the Providence cds. Thus it is unknown why, where and when this 2c marking was applied.

Letter excerpt: " I have this day forwarded per Stonington R Road to your address one small cask of the patent Mordant applicable to all colors."

Mordant is a substance, typically an inorganic oxide, that combines with a dye or stain and thereby fixes it in a material, forming an insoluble compound. Used in dying woolens.

The letter is addressed to Rowland G. Hazard (1801-1888) who operated, with his two brothers, the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company. One of his textile mill's products was woolen shawls and other high quality woolens, which explains the use of this shipment of Mordant. Link to Hazard, who had an interesting career and was involved in slavery activities, which made him unpopular in the South, affecting his business.
