"Providence" 31 x 4mm straightline postmark with manuscript "16. May" on folded cover originating from Charleston, S.C., April 24, 1796, according to docketing. Manuscript directive "via Providence". On reverse is forwarding agent manuscript marking "forwarded by your Obt. Servt. D.W. Marsh, Provid. May 14, 1796". Manuscript "8" due rate. Act of 1792, 30 to 60 miles zone rate 8 cents. Ex-"Knee" collection, Richard (Buck) Jordan.

This letter was likely carried under separate cover to Providence; maybe a packet got delivered to the agent for a single charge of 6c and then he could mail them all as individual letters and saving many 2c ship fees in the process. This agent marking is not listed in Rowe.
