1893 Columbian Exposition 5c chocolate postal entire (#U350) upgraded with 1890 issue small American Banknote 5c chocolate (#223) tied by "New York, N.Y. Feb 16 8 PM 94" duplex postmark, to Wien, Austria. "Por La Champagne" routing handstamp. Purple "Muller, Schall & Co. New York Feb 16 1894" merchant's circular marking. The steamer La Champagne was operated by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (shortened to "CIE. GLE. TRANSATLANTIQUE", or CGT), typically known overseas as the French Line, which operated between Le Harve and New York. CGT was a shipping company established in 1861 as an attempt to revive the French merchant marine, the poor state of which was self-evident during the Crimean War of 1856.
