Information about the sender: Dating to the founding of Julius Kauffman and Company in 1842, the firm became Kauffman & Runge in 1868 when Henry J. Runge settled in Galveston. His son Henry J. Runge, Jr., born in 1859, became important in the business. The firm imported coffee, liquors and groceries, and was the largest cotton exporting house in Galveston for many years. The firm’s grocery trade was primarily with patrons in Texas. However, cotton shipments were made to almost all parts of the world including Mexico, England, France, Germany and Russia.
