Folded letter datelined "New York 11th April 1854" to Cognac, Charente department, France. Endorsed "Per Canada via Boston" and "via Paris". Carried by Cunard Line steamer Canada, which departed Boston April 12, 1854, arrived Liverpool April 24, It was marked with red handstamp "Paid"  in Boston and penciled "5" to denote prepaid 5 cents British open mail route by British packet. French handstamp "13" decimes due, applied in Paris. There is an entry marking "Etats-Unis Paq. Brit./B.A. Calais/ -- Avril 54/" used at Paris to show letter from United States by British service to United Kingdom and entered France at Calais.

The 13 decimes due charge was composed of: French Inland postage of 5 decimes, British Transit and Sea postage of 8 decimes = 13 decimes total. The U.S. inland postage was 5 cents, which was prepaid in this case.

On reverse: "Boston Br. Pkt. Apr. 12" 33mm circular datestamp, red "Br. 25 Ap 25 1854" London transit marking, "Paris 26 Avril 54" transit marking, "Paris A Bordeaux 26 Avril 54" railroad marking, and "Cognac (15) 27 Avril 54" receiving marking.
