Description:

Red "San Augustine, Tex. Apr. 12" circular datestamp (day added in manuscript) on 3c red on buff die 1 Nesbitt entire (#U2), with pen cancel, addressed to New Orleans. Nesbitt seal on reverse. Buchannon Carroll & Co. correspondence.

The sender used a red wax wafer to seal the envelope, ignoring the gum on the rear flap. Old habits die hard.

San Augustine was founded in 1832 with land owned by Thomas S. McFarland. The town was named after the Presidio de San Agustín de Ahumada, which had been named in honor of the (1755-1760) Viceroy of New Spain, Don Agustín de Ahumada y Villalón. The post office in San Augustine was established in 1848.
