Description: This cover was cancelled aqt Austin, Texas on October 10, no year indicated, with a Scott stamp number 73 paying the postage.  The docketing is dated October 11, 1869.  The return address is Headquarters, Fifth Military District, Office Attending Surgeon, Official Business.  The "Official Busines" was lined out.  By the First Reconstruction Act of March 2, 1867, the United States Congress divided the defeated South, already restored under presidential Reconstruction, into five military districts, of which Louisiana and Texas, under General Phil H. Sheridan at New Orleans, constituted the Fifth Military District.  In April, 1870 Texas was readmitted to the Union, and the Fifth Military District ceased to exist.
