Origin: Montgomery, Alabama, UNITED STATES
Destination: Petersburg, Virginia, UNITED STATES
Description: Three cent orange brown, Scott 10, used in conjunction with a One Cent Type II stamp from plate one early.  The "WAY" marking indicates that the letter was picked up my a postal rider outside of Montgomery at a location that did not have a post office.  The fee for the "WAY COVER" was one cent in addition to the 3ct letter postage.

t appears that the letter was carried to New Orleans and placed on a ship most likely bound for a Virginia port.

The year of use can be determined from the color of the one cent stamp being a darker blue plate one early stamp.
