Origin: UNITED STATES
Destination: Albany, New York, UNITED STATES

Description:

1861 1c blue (#63) tied by Cross-Roads cancel on wrapper to Albany, N.Y. Origin unknown.

There is a pencil notation at left: "came May 6th 1864, friendly call". Also, at the right, there is a very light pencil note, partially erased "Last, January 27 1867". However, if either date is to be believed, then this wrapper is underpaid by 1c because effective July 1, 1863, the domestic rate for circulars and printed matter was increased from 1c to 2c for papers up to 4 ounces. The rate was lowered to 1c per 2 ounces in 1872.
