Description:

1923 2c carmine and 10c orange perf 11 flat plate (#554, 562) tied by "Yellow Springs, Ohio. May 28 12:30 P. 1923" duplex postmark on small registered cover to Milwaukee, Wis.  Purple Registered backstamps from Yellow Springs, Ohio and Milwaukee, Wis.

It was prohibited to use regular dated postmarks on the face of registered mail effective January 1, 1911; hence the originating post office did not follow the proper procedure in this case.

Yellow Springs is a village in Greene County, Ohio, and is home to Antioch College, which was founded in 1852. The village takes its name from a natural spring located in the nearby Glen Helen Nature Preserve which is rich in iron ore, leaving a yellowish-orange coloring on the rocks.
