Wounded Knee, Dakota Territory clear “Aug 11 1888” territorial period datestamp on 2c Brown entire to New York City, corner card of trading post owner and US Marshall, George Bartlett, ("Pine Ridge Agency" text corrected in manuscript to "Wounded Knee"), a rare example of this evocative postmark

This Post Office was established on 22 December, 1886 at the trading post of George E. Bartlett on Wounded Knee Creek, Shannon County in present day South Dakota. It was the site of the massacre of the Big Foot band of Sioux Indians by the 7th Cavalry on 29 December, 1890. The massacre ended the thirty years of war for the western plains, which began at New Ulm, Minnesota and came to a climax in the screaming and gunfire that
was Wounded Knee.
