"Providence R.I. Mar 7 5 cts." (1853) 34mm circular integral rate datestamp on blue folded letter, with manuscript "5" collect rate, to Yarmouth, Maine. Letter is datelined "Providence R.I. Mar 6/ 53".

Excerpt from letter: "I arrived here Friday night (Mar 4) yesterday (Mar 5) had a violent storm." The letter was written on a Sunday, Mar. 6, and mailed the next day, Monday, Mar. 7, 1853.

Effective July 1, 1851 the rate up to 3,000 miles per half ounce was 3c prepaid, 5c collect as an incentive to use stamps.
