Description:

Brattleboro Vt Sep 23 orange postmark, "Free" handstamp and "P.O. Business" endorsement on partially printed, Brattleboro post office form (signed in type by F.N. Palmer, PM who had just issued his privisional postage stamps)  advising addressee in New York City that a journal published by him was not picked up at Brattleboro office, the letter was turned over to City Despatch for delivery with "No. 2 Cedar Street" address added and red "City Despatch Post Sep 25" datestamp and matching "FREE" handstamp, an exceptional use, ex Wolcott, Knapp, Hall and Conland (two examples known of this "Free" handstamp at this period, the other, ex Kapiloff, is dated Sep 30, 1846)
