Violet "Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express Wallace, Cal." oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 10-18) on 2c red on amber postal entire (#U232) with Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express printed frank, to San Francisco with purple Sept. 30 1884 Wells, Fargo San Francisco receiving handstamp on reverse. The Wallace marking is very rare. 

Wallace is a small town at the far west edge of Calaveras County, California. The town is named for John Wallace, who was a well-known engineer and surveyor in the area. He had been elected San Joaquin County surveyor in 1868.
