[Earliest Reported Letter fom Newfoundland in private hands], 1708 Letter signed "Tho Loyd" from  Major Thomas Lloyd, Commander of Fort William and Governor of the Colony, to the Lord's Commissioners for trade and Plantations in London. Letter written two months before the fort fell to the French. concludes:
"Pardon me if I say I am proud of ye occasion to assure your Honor of ye good posture of defense this part of the country is in ... So I dare promise a stout defense if ye enemy should dare attempt us."
no address leaf and probably carried by Naval convoy, docketed on reverse, ex Pratt
